New Hampshire Vehicle Registration Fees for SUVs
New Hampshire doesn't charge different registration fees based on whether your vehicle is an SUV, sedan, or truck. Instead, registration costs depend on your vehicle's weight. Most SUVs fall into one of two weight categories that determine your yearly fee.
2026 Registration Fees by Weight
| Vehicle Weight | Monthly Fee | Annual Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 3,001-5,000 lbs | $4.00 | $48.00 |
| 5,001-8,000 lbs | $5.50 | $66.00 |
Most compact and mid-size SUVs weigh between 3,001 and 5,000 pounds, so they typically cost $48 per year to register. Larger SUVs and full-size models usually fall into the 5,001 to 8,000-pound range, costing $66 annually.
Additional Fees You'll Pay
Registration renewal isn't your only DMV cost. When you first register your SUV, you'll also need:
- New title: $35
- Vehicle registration permit: included in the fees above
If you need duplicate paperwork or have title transfers, add $10 each. These title fees increased on January 1, 2026, so budget accordingly if your registration expires soon.
How to Find Your Exact Fee
Your precise registration cost depends on your SUV's exact weight and registration expiration date. To get an accurate quote:
- Check your vehicle's dry weight on the door jamb or owner's manual
- Visit your local town or city clerk's office
- Use your municipality's online fee estimator if available
Many New Hampshire towns offer online calculators that estimate fees based on your vehicle's weight and when you need to renew.
When Fees Changed
These rates took effect January 1, 2026, as part of New Hampshire's updated motor vehicle fee schedule. If you renewed your registration in late 2025, you're locked in at the old rates. New or renewed registrations after January 1 use the current rates shown above.
